Why Mankind Needs a Mediator to Connect With God
By Everest John Alexander of Kingdom Learning Network
Sin separates man from God, this is evident because He said, “...In the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die” Gen. 2:17, death is a separartion so paraphrased, this reads, “... the very moment that you sin against God, you’ll become spiritually separated from Him!” Sin separates man from God! It creates an impassable gulf that we cannot traverse! We cannot get to God in a sinful condition! We can pray, we can go to church, we can surely read the Bible but we cannot, in a sinful condition, meet with God personally! In other words, we could not have a personal relationship with Him and with no relationship we could not have any fellowship! We needed a mediator, someone who could initially approach God on our collective behalf and make the way for us to be able to approach Him individually. In Christ Jesus, we have exactly that person, “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”, 1st Tim. 2:5! That’s why Jesus said, “I am the way,” John 14:6. It is important to note that sin separates man from God but not God from man! We couldn’t reach Him but He could always reach us.

someone who could initially approach God on our collective behalf I would think this would be for a collective relationship. For a personal relationship wouldn't we need a mediator who would initially approach God on our personal behalf?

If you had quoted the entire phrase it would probably have made more sense to you. "We needed a mediator, someone who could initially approach God on our collective behalf and make the way for us to be able to approach Him individually." Jesus' work affected the human race on two levels both collectively and individually and I made that clear in the phrase above.
