Do Ghosts Exist?
By Everest John Alexander of Kingdom Learning Network
The word, "Ghost" is mentioned many times in the bible. Here are just a few scriptural references, Genesis 25:8, Genesis 25:17, Job 14:10, Lamentations 1:19 The word, "Ghost" in these passages is translated from the Hebrew word, "gava" pronounced "gaw-vah" and means; "to breathe out (for the last time), to expire, to die." In the New Testament it’s the same, in the Gospel of Mark 15:37 for instance, the original Greek word used is, “ekpneo” pronounced “ek-pneh'-o” and means, “to expire.” These scripture verses are simply describing the deaths of these people, nothing more. The bible declares in Hebrews 9:27, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” So, when the scriptures say, they gave up the ghost, it simply means that they breathed for the last time… That’s all. As a rule, Ghosts do NOT exist! There is no Purgatory, no reincarnation, no wandering around to complete unfinished business or any such fantasies. Here’s what God says happens to a departed soul who has NOT repented and received salvation, “…the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments…” Luke 16:22-23 Now, here’s what happens to someone who HAS repented and received salvation, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 2nd Corinthians 5:8 The moment you depart this life you are either with Jesus in Heaven or in torments in Hell... The choice is given to each individual. You either believe the whole Bible or you believe none of it - There is no middle ground! There are only two biblical exceptions where people have returned from the dead to deliver messages to the living. And that’s exactly what they are… Exceptions, not the rule! Samuel returned to deliver a message to King Saul (1st Samuel 28:7-16) and Moses returned to deliver a message to Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-4). We can’t even say Elijah returned from the dead because according to the biblical record Elijah never died but was taken alive into Heaven. So, based on biblical authority we can say with certainty that as a rule, the dead DO NOT return to walk the earth and ghosts do not exist.

Interesting, and enlightening. Thank you! I must say I'm surprised you come out so strongly against ghosts, because the concept of returning from the dead is a crucial aspect of the central figure in your religion.

Thanks for your comment, OnePointofLight. I appreciate it. I must correct your misunderstanding however, about Christianity and Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is NOT a Ghost! My Intel was written explaining that Ghosts do not exist. Jesus Christ is a human being who was resurrected from the dead, which is completely different from what a Ghost is supposed to be. The Merriam-Webster's Dictionary describes a Ghost as: "A disembodied soul; the soul of a dead person believed to be an inhabitant of the unseen world." When somebody is resurrected by the power of God, that human being who was dead is now made alive again. They are able to interact as a normal human being IN EVERY WAY! They are NOT some disembodied spirit without a physical body, which is what a Ghost is. The two entities; a resurrected person and a Ghost, are completely different. Here's what Jesus said in His own words about Himself: "Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. (Luke 24:39) A spirit or a ghost does not have flesh and bones as I have, said Jesus! So, it is obvious that what a Ghost is and what Jesus is, is NOT the same at all! He is a man who was once dead and who has now become a real living, breathing human being once again!

Interesting point One Point of Light. What is the Jewish understanding of Ghosts? I would think that Lazarus should also be mentioned here. John 11:44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. KJV

Hi Biblefreeorg. Thanks for your contribution. I appreciate it. The answers I gave to Texas Gent and One Point of Light should contain enough information to clarify any misconceptions and misunderstandings you might have about this topic also. God bless!
Seems that Luke 24:39 contradicts your assertion that ghosts don't exist. Why would Jesus compare himself to something that doesn't exist?

I appreciate your response to my Intel, Dirk. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. Your logic, however, is faulty. If we were to follow your logic and subscribe to your way of thinking then we'd have to say that Elves exist. For instance, I can make the statement, "The difference between Angels and Elves is that Angels are spirit beings while Elves are flesh and blood." My point is this; not because a comparison is made to something that means that it has to actually exist. If the object is a recognizable part of human culture it can be intelligently referenced without being real. We talk about Aliens all the time, in every conceivable context and they are yet to be proven real.
